Test Description
The Slow Creator Fund Associate will work directly with the partners primarily on sourcing, diligencing, and closing investments. Additionally, you can expect to play a key role in fund marketing and events, and support the partners with the creator portfolio, LP relations, and firm management, when needed. The role is ideal for people with experience in banking, consulting, or high growth tech and looking to learn how to back best-in-class creator entrepreneurs and invest through a novel fund. This is venture-venture capital. In most cases, expect that this is a 24-36 month role, after which point you move on to a bigger venture fund, operating role, or start something of your own. Who We Are: Slow Ventures is an early-stage focused venture capital firm based out of San Francisco, Boston, and New York. We are generalists and invest at the earliest stages and ideas. We believe, and have seen proven time and again, that great things often take time to inflect. Our number-one job is to back great founders on their journey. We've backed from their earliest days companies like Venmo, Robinhood, Solana, Otter, Teamshares, Lightening Labs, Algorand, Allbirds, Casper, Ro, Airtable, Aleo, Airtable, Domino Data Labs, Pilpack, Embark Vet, Zipline, and many many more. This year, we raised a $64m Creator Fund to invest behind creator entrepreneurs. We believe that creators with distribution, authority, and trust have inverted how businesses are built: solving for distribution first and product second. Our fund is designed to help this new type of founder scale. In this role, you will be working with Megan Lightcap, the Partner who leads the Creator Fund, as well as Billy Parks, a Venture Partner on the fund who joined from The Chernin Group, and Sam Lessin, a GP at Slow. What You'll Do: RESEARCH, SOURCING, ETC: Investigate new industries, ideas, and themes. Conduct landscape and competitive research. Find, and get in front of, the most interesting creators and opportunities. COMMUNITY & CONTENT: Help compose position pieces to market new ideas, run topic focused mini-conferences, and host themed dinners. DEAL EXECUTION: Support the partners and creators on getting deals done: diligence, negotiating, closing process, finance, etc. SPECIAL PROJECTS: Inevitably we come up with a few ‘special projects’ every year – it could be building an app, launching a newsletter, etc. But we look for generalists who are excited to tackle special projects as they arise. What We Look For: We look for really smart, driven, type-A people who know a thing or two about business and finance. You must be intellectually pliable and weirdly self-motivated. The easiest people for us to hire: you scored a 1600 on your SATs and played a varsity sport or are an endurance athlete. You started at a top investment bank or consulting firm (or maybe Meta or Google) and at some point realized the career track thing wasn't for you and want to do something more interesting. You are willing to apprentice for a few years to learn what's going on in the wild west of investing and entrepreneurship. You are deeply interested in, and have a point of view on, the world of creators. You have great taste in people. At some point, you started a blog or newsletter, grew a follow on [insert social app], and have written interesting opinions on things. You are intellectually honest, open, funny, not an asshole, confident but humble. You communicate clearly and succinctly. You show up prepared. And ideally you really have failed at something. You don't actually need all (or any) of these things but this is the vibe of someone who we think would succeed in the role. Role Pros-Cons: PROS: This is a new investment model. For the right person, this should be incredibly exciting and motivating. We are charting a new course. People pick up the phone for us. Slow is a great calling card and a super fast education in the early-stage investing game. You will meet really different and interesting people. We aren’t assholes. We are a lot of things but we are good people. Turns out not everyone is, and the right people value that. You will have a good time on the team. There is a ton of latitude. The core responsibilities this job are real; there is formal process and work to do with goals that matter. That said, you are going to have time and freedom to do stuff that is good for us and advances your career. CONS: This is a new investment model. For the wrong person, this is a disaster with little precedent on how to do things. We are charting a new course. Slow itself isn’t a career path by default. This is a 24-36 month role. If you crush it, then we'd consider our needs and there might be an opportunity to move into a principal role, but there is zero expectation. This is an education, not a career. While you'll work with Megan in the SF office, the rest of the team is somewhat remote. You have to be self starter and self motivated to get a lot out of this role.
